How to uninstall Online Backup

Environment

Products:
McAfee Online Backup

Operating Systems:
Windows 8, 8.1
Windows 7
Windows Vista
Windows XP

Summary

This article contains instructions on how to remove both the standalone and integrated installations of McAfee Online Backup (MOBK).

MOBK is now End of Life. To view the End of Life announcement, see: TS102092.

NOTE: The unlimited storage version does not limit the amount of data that you can upload to the online servers. The limited storage version does have limits on the amount of data that you can upload. Aside from the storage limitation, installing and removing the application functions are identical.

There are two standalone and two integrated installation types:

Standalone installations
  • Online Backup Unlimited Storage is the only McAfee application installed
  • Online Backup Limited Storage is the only McAfee application installed
Integrated installations
  • Online Backup Unlimited Storage is accompanied by another McAfee Security suite
  • Online Backup Limited Storage included as a feature of Total Protection or Internet Security suite
There are three different methods to uninstall MOBK, depending on the type of your installation. Please review all methods and select the appropriate option for your environment.

Solution 1

Uninstall using Windows controls for standalone installations
The first method is for standalone installations where no other McAfee products are installed on your computer. In this environment, the correct way to uninstall MOBK is using the Windows controls.

Windows 7/Vista

  1. Click the Windows button and select Control Panel.
  2. Double-click Programs and Features.
  3. Select McAfee Online Backup and click Change/Remove.
  4. In the Windows Installer dialog, click Yes to confirm that you want to uninstall the product.
  5. After the uninstall completes, restart your computer.

IMPORTANT: Save any open files, and then close all other applications before you restart your computer.

Windows XP

  1. Click Start, Settings, and select Control Panel.
  2. Double-click Add or Remove Programs.
  3. Select McAfee Online Backup and click Change/Remove.
  4. In the Windows Installer dialog, click Yes to confirm that you want to uninstall the product.
  5. After the uninstall completes, restart your computer.

IMPORTANT: Save any open files, and then close all other applications before restarting your computer.

Solution 2

Manual Removal for integrated installations

The second method is for 'integrated' installations where other McAfee products are installed on your computer. In this scenario, you can remove only the MOBK application from your computer leaving the McAfee Security suite in place.

NOTE: These steps require advanced computer knowledge.
  1. Open a command prompt with administrator privileges.

NOTE: This process will not work correctly without administrator privileges.

    1. Click Start, and in the Search field, type cmd.exe.
    2. Right-click cmd.exe in the search results and select Run as administrator.
    3. If you are prompted by User account control, click Yes.

The command window will open. You will use this window in step 3, below.

  2. Determine OS bit level:

    1. Click Start, and in the Search field, type system.
    2. Click System Information in the Programs list.
    3. With System Summary selected in the navigation pane on the left, the Operating System information needed will be on the right:

      • For a 64-bit version operating system: system type = x64-based PC.
      • For a 32-bit version operating system: system type = x86-based PC.

  3. In the command prompt window that you opened in step 1, navigate to the appropriate application folder of MOBK for the bit level of the OS:

    1. For 64-bit environments, type the following command and press ENTER:

      cd C:\Program Files (x86)\McAfeeMOBK\

    2. For 32-bit environments, type the following command and press ENTER:

      cd C:\Program Files\McAfeeMOBK\

  4. To start the application removal, type the following command and press ENTER:

    MozyUninstaller.exe /force

NOTE: The screen might briefly flash - this is normal. The desktop icons and SecurityCenter links will then be removed.

  5. Restart the computer when the process completes.
  6. Verify that the MOBK application is no longer present on the computer.

Solution 3

Uninstall, and then reinstall the McAfee Security suite for integrated installations
This method is for integrated installations where other McAfee products are installed on your computer and you want to start fresh. After you uninstall and restart your computer, you will need to re-install your McAfee Security suite.

NOTE: The option to install MOBK will not longer be present.

  2. Confirm that MOBK has been removed from your computer. If it is still present, follow the steps in Solution 1 before re-installing the McAfee Security suite
  3. Re-install your McAfee Security suite using the steps detailed in article TS100342
