How to reinstall or replace a computer that was running McAfee Online Backup

Affected Suites:
McAfee Total Protection
McAfee Internet Security

Affected Products:
Online Backup

In the event of a disaster or a planned migration to a new computer, you can assume the use of an existing Online Backup license on the repaired or replacement computer. After the original license has been transferred to the repaired or replacement computer, you will regain access to the files you had previously archived.

Perform the steps in this article to reinstall and assume the use of your original license.

NOTE: If the old computer is still online after the license is transferred, you will no longer be able to perform backups from this computer. You can still restore files to the original computer for a period of 30 days. After the license transfer is complete, if the old computer is kept online, McAfee recommends that you uninstall the Online Backup client.

Transferring the license to a repaired computer
If your backed up data does not exist on the repaired or replacement computer, McAfee recommends that you restore the data before you transfer the license. You can restore your backed up data to any system by creating a web restore from the restore page of your online McAfee user account (http://home.mcafee.com).

NOTE: When you make a request to restore files, you will see a message that that the restore files are being created. This may take an extended period of time. After the files are available, you will receive an email with links to the data. Download the web restore file(s) to the replacement system, unzip them, and then move the files back to their original locations.

For detailed instructions on restoring data, see TS100754.

Installation and license transfer: Configuration and License Assignment

After you install McAfee Online Backup, perform the following steps to complete the configuration and transfer the license.

NOTE: McAfee recommends that you complete your initial configuration through the Installation Wizard and not use the configuration options in the tool tray icon.

  1. On the Select a License Screen, select Transfer a license from another computer, and then click Next.
NOTE: If you have more than one computer associated with your account, you see all computers listed in the license transfer window.
  2. Locate and select the license that was associated with the name of the original computer and click Next.
  3. To confirm the replacement and activate the new account, click Next.
  4. After the replacement process is complete, click Next on the confirmation dialog box.
  5. Confirm the backup sets you want Online Backup to use are selected, and then click Next. The Online Backup bandwidth speed test runs and examines your Internet connection.

NOTE: Online Backup requires a high-speed Internet connection to perform backups. If the bandwidth test fails, McAfee recommends that you contact your ISP to confirm that your connection is broadband and is functioning correctly. If it is functioning correctly and you find the performance on your backups is not sufficient, you may need to upgrade to a faster connection.
  6. Click Next on the the Backup Speed Selection dialog box. You now see the final configuration screen with the following three options. Select the appropriate option for your needs:
    • Start my backup now
    • Wait until my PC is idle, then automatically start my backup
    • Not yet, I want to customize my backup settings using advanced options
  7. Click Finish.
  8. After the configuration window opens, you can make further configuration changes or click Save to update your configuration.

NOTE: The first time the repaired or replaced computer starts a backup, the computer reports that it needs to back up all of your files. This is expected behavior. After the computer contacts the Online Backup server, it recognizes that the local data is also available online and does not need to be uploaded.

Your first backup with the migrated license will not take as long as the original backup; only new or changed files are archived. After the initial synchronization with the online servers, backups return to normal.
