The computer continuously prompts for a restart after a recent product update or subscription renewal

Microsoft Windows XP


Some McAfee customers report that they are continuously prompted to restart their computers after a product update. Other customers report the same issue after renewing or changing their McAfee subscription.


In some cases, the update process fails to remove certain registry keys, settings, or other files. When this occurs, the product detects these items and incorrectly assumes that an update is in progress and requests a restart. 


McAfee Virtual Technician (MVT) includes resolution for this issue. Run MVT:

  1. Go to http://mvt.mcafee.com/.  
  2. Click Next to begin the download.
  3. When you are prompted to begin the download, click Run, then click Run again.
  4. Click I Agree to allow MVT to scan your system.
