Your computer is at risk: Real-Time Scanning: Off or Your Firewall is off

Problem

Your protection status in the McAfee Security Center is no longer green, changing to either red or gray, indicating the security application needs attention.

When Real-Time Scanning is OFF, the status changes to red and the following message displays:

Your Computer is at Risk.

The Virus and Spyware Protection tile status color also changes to red and displays the following status:

Real-Time Scanning: Off

When the Firewall is off, the status changes to either red or gray, depending on the Firewall notification settings. 

When the status bar is gray, the following message displays:

Your Firewall is off 
 
The Web and Email Protection tile status color also changes to gray and displays the following status:

Firewall: Off


Before you begin

As a best practice, McAfee recommends that you update and restart your computer:
  1. Right-click the M icon in your system tray and select Check for updates.

    From the Windows 8 tiled environment, select your Desktop, then perform the previous step.
     
  2. After the update completes, restart your computer.

Applying the Solutions
Perform the steps in each of the Solutions below, in order, as appropriate for the version of the suite installed to enable Real-Time Scanning in the main window. If Real-Time Scanning does not start, or becomes disabled again, continue to the next Solution. If Real-Time Scanning remains green and enabled, you do not need to continue.

Solution 1

Enable Real-Time Scanning and the Firewall

  1. Open your McAfee product. 
  2. Click Navigation and select Real-Time Scanning.
  3. Click Turn On
  4. Click Navigation and select Firewall.
  5. Click Turn On
  6. Return to the main product window and verify that Real-Time Scanning and the Firewall remain on.
  7. Close your McAfee product.
If your status still shows that you are not protected, continue to the next Solution.



Solution 2

Run McAfee Virtual Technician (MVT)
MVT is an automated self-healing tool that can diagnose and fix many problems related to your McAfee product.

Go to http://mvt.mcafee.com and follow the prompts to install and run MVT. If MVT discovers any problems, allow it to repair those problems and attempt to enable Real-Time Scanning again.

If your status still shows that you are not protected, continue to the next Solution.



Solution 3

Download and run the oas-disabled-fix.cmd utility
IMPORTANT:
This solution applies only to version 12.0 and lower security suites, running on Windows 7 and lower. To find your product version, open your McAfee suite and click Help. If the SecurityCenter version is not 12.0 or lower, or you are running Windows 8 or 8.1, skip this solution.

  1. Right-click the following link and save the file to your desktop:

    http://download.mcafee.com/products/licensed/cust_support_patches/oas-disabled-fix.cmd
     
  2. Double-click the oas-disabled-fix.cmd tool.
     
    NOTE: Windows Vista and 7 users should right-click oas-disabled-fix.cmd and select Run as Administrator.

    If you receive the error StopService: Unable to open service McShield via SCM (5), press CTRL+C to terminate the process. You will be prompted to terminate the batch job. Type Y and press ENTER. Run the oas-disabled-fix utility again.
     
  3. Restart your computer and ensure that McAfee Security Center shows that Real-Time Scanning is enabled.
If your status still shows that you are not protected, continue to the next Solution.


Solution 4

Boot the computer into Safe Mode, then boot normally
IMPORTANT:
This solution applies only to version 12.1 and higher security suites. To find your version, open your McAfee suite and click Help. If the SecurityCenter version is not 12.1 or higher, skip this solution.

  1. Save all files and close all programs.
  2. Restart the computer.
  3. Repeatedly press the F8 key on the keyboard until you see the Boot Selection menu.
  4. Select the option to boot to Safe Mode (no networking support).
  5. Allow the computer to completely boot into safe mode, then wait five minutes without activity.
  6. Restart the computer normally.
  7. After the computer boots normally, wait another five minutes, and then check the status of Real-Time Scanning in the main product window.
If your status still shows that you are not protected, continue to the next Solution.

Solution 5

Check for non-McAfee security software
Other security software may cause a conflict with your McAfee products. For instructions on how to remove incompatible third-party applications, and a list of many incompatible products, see TS101083.

After you have removed any incompatible software, enable Real-Time Scanning in the main product window. If your status still shows that you are not protected, continue to the next Solution.

Solution 6

Remove and reinstall your McAfee software
